What is your service? Who are you? What is your specialty?
We are Melanie and Tyler Dexter of TMDexter Photography. We are a Colorado Springs based husband/wife photography team. Our wedding day packages range from 4 to 10 hours of coverage and come with two photographers and digital files. Most couples also do an engagement session which is a fantastic way for us to get to know our clients and for them to get comfortable in front of the camera. We describe our work as vibrant, heartfelt, and natural – as artists we thrive on creatively capturing the emotion and beauty that exists in the moment. Photos are memories that can last forever, and we’re honored to tell the story of couples’ love for years to come.
Who are your clients?
Our clients are excited about their wedding photography! They understand the value of making time for photos during their wedding day. Our couples are sweet and relaxed, and we enjoy sharing in their heartfelt ceremonies and receptions. Most of our couples are married in the beauty of the great Colorado outdoors, but we equally enjoy the modern elegance of venues like The Mining Exchange, The Pinery at the Hill, and the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center.
When and Why did you start your business?
We officially started our business in 2013, but our love for photography started years before that in college. We would go on dates to the beach to have a “photo competition” (we made our roommates judge!), or go on a walk together and take photos of flowers. We love that photography is something we can do and enjoy together. In 2011 we shot our first wedding for a friend, and from there our hobby developed into a business. We love being a part of one of the most important days in a couples’ life; weddings continually inspire us as a couple and as artists. We love the challenge of creatively capturing all the emotion of the day, and we continue to push ourselves to learn more and become a better team.
What or Who inspires you?
We both grew up with a love for the arts and for learning. We definitely inspire each other, and we enjoy sharing about what we’re currently learning technically and artistically. Other photographers both local and worldwide give us inspiration and help us continue to push our boundaries. Creation is also a huge inspiration for us. There is so much beauty around us, it’s continually changing and never gets old even though it tells the same story to us everyday.
Do you have any advice for newly engaged couples?
Relax! Wedding planning (and weddings) can be stressful, so stay focused on relationship – with your fiance, with your family, with your friends. That’s what matters. Oh, and marriage counseling is not just for a marriage on the rocks, it’s to keep your marriage off the rocks!
What is one of your guilty pleasures?
For the two of us; red wine and our fireplace, Dutch Bros coffee, and watching low-budget shark movies like Sharknado 1, 2, and 3. I (Melanie) secretly count down the days each month until I get my GAP rewards and can get free clothes! For me (Tyler), I am such a homebody that a staycation is more fun than a weekend away – I can watch my plants grow, lounge in the sunshine on our porch, dream of homesteading, then stay up late with two bowls of popcorn watching sci-fi. Obviously we couldn’t name just one guilty pleasure…!
What is one thing newly engaged couples should know about your service?
As wedding photographers, we feel it’s part of our job to help couples plan for a smoothly running wedding day. Before each wedding we always take the time to sit down with our couples and help (as much or as little as needed) create a timeline for the wedding day. We also help couples come up with a family shot list and give them tips for making the day as stress-free as possible.
What is your favorite part about a wedding?
That is such a hard question to answer! I think our hearts still race when everyone stands for the bride’s entrance. And I (Melanie) always tear up during the father/daughter dance. But I really love that moment when the bride and groom have just exited down the aisle, and they turn to each other and say something like, “Oh my gosh, that just happened!” There’s SO much emotion going on in that moment! It makes me think, wow, we just witnessed something really amazing. For me (Tyler), the most incredible moment is when couples see each other for the first time. It makes me think of when I saw Melanie on our wedding day and how I realized how blessed I was to have this woman stand with me through life. I also realized this whole getting married thing was actually for real in that moment too, and I couldn’t help but lose my composure over the whole ordeal.
