Who are you? What is your specialty?
Hello! I am Sarah Rovner, owner and lead designer of Calla Blue Florals. I specialize in the floral art of wedding and event desig
What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about couples and bringing their vision to reality. I am so blessed to have chosen a career in which I get to be a part of one of the happiest days in an engaged couples’ life: the day they become one. Even though I’m a small part in their day, being able to see all of the smiles, nerves, happy tears, and pure excitement on their faces as I deliver their personals, design their arbor, set up centerpieces, and place cake flowers makes my heart happy. Flowers are one of the few items in a wedding that the couple doesn’t get to try on, taste test, see in person, or put together before the big day. It’s my job to ensure what they are envisioning in their mind is what becomes reality on their wedding day.
What do you stand for?
I take great pride in making each client’s floral journey one that eases their mind from the minute we meet for the first time until we say our farewells on the wedding day after each floral piece is in its perfect spot. This means being available, transparent, a good listener, and above all, a professional at all times. Planning a wedding is stressful enough and my goal is to help ease some of that stress.
Who are your clients?
My clients are ones who appreciate that flowers, no matter how big or small, can enhance their space and add that elegant, rustic, modern, lavish or eclectic vibe. I’m a firm believer that people are brought into each other’s lives at the right time for the right reasons – I’ve met some pretty amazing clients and am excited to meet even more!
When and Why did you Start your Business?
I started Calla Blue Florals in 2016, after studying under the incredible direction of Maggie Binet, founder of The School of Floral Arts, located in Denver, CO. A lot of people aren’t aware that there is formal schooling and certification to be a florist, and that was an important aspect to me when embarking on this new journey. After being in the corporate world for twelve years, I wanted to do something completely different – something that I knew was making a difference in people’s lives – something that made me happy and my potential clients happy. Each time I hand a bride her bouquet, the huge smile, giggles, and oftentimes, happy tears, reaffirms to me my “why” for starting my business.
What or Who Inspires You?
I have so many that inspire me each time I sit down to design. I look at floral design as more of an art than just throwing together a few different flowers and tying them together in a bouquet or putting them in a container. Making sure I am pick colors that compliment each other, choosing different types of flowers that will hold up for hours on end, and creating the shape and flow of a bouquet or arrangement that is unique and fits each couple are just a few of the things that are on my ‘check list’ for each wedding or event. More specifically, I am inspired by the raw talent of the ladies at Bella Lu Floral & Event Design, Shannon with The Olive and Poppy, Kelly with 3 Leaf Floral, and Casey with LaRue Floral.
D0 you Have Any Advice for Newly Engaged Couples?
Enjoy your time as an engaged couple! Don’t make the entire engagement solely about wedding planning – it can be pretty stressful at times so take some of the time to celebrate your engagement together. Speaking of stress, I can’t recommend hiring a professional wedding planner enough. They are worth their weight in gold to say the least. Not only do they make the day run smoothly, take care of all the last minute details and any behind the scenes issues, they make it easy for the rest of your vendors as well. The last thing we want to do is bug you on your big day – so let us bug your wedding planner instead!
What is One of Your Guilty Pleasures?
A good binge watch on Netflix or Hulu complete with snacks a tasty bottle of craft beer or glass of port wine!
What is one thing Newly Engaged Couples Should Know About Your Service?
Each wedding is a custom project and my couples will never feel pushed aside or at the bottom of the totem pole. I only book one event per weekend – my team and I will work tirelessly and our full attention is all yours to make sure everything down to the last detail is taken care of. I take great pride in that – oh, and I’m also big on hugs so don’t be alarmed if you receive several from me throughout the our time together!
What is your Favorite Part About a Wedding?
I have two, actually. The first is when I go to my wholesaler to pick up flowers and greenery for the wedding. I get giddy seeing my cart and all the beauties on it. My second is presenting the bride with her bouquet and seeing her reaction. It seems to take some of those wedding day jitters away, even if just for a few quiet moments.
